azw, as Derek said earlier in this thread. Some notes: kindles don't natively support epubs. Amazon recommends people use the free Kindle Previewer app to convert epubs to. I tried downloading some other file converters, but none of them were good. This worked, with no blank pages! But then, when I tried to do it with all of the chapters, the conversion (to azw3) always failed. Since I don't know how to crop an entire ebook and it.
